A History of Medical Innovation
As the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, Mass General has been a leader in bridging innovative science with highly advanced clinical care for more than 200 years.
Among the medical and scientific “firsts” at Mass General are the first demonstration of ether as a general anesthetic, the first X-ray exposure produced in a hospital, the first antiseptic operating suite in the U.S., and the invention of MRI and fMRI imaging technologies. [More Facts at a Glance]

Research at Mass General takes place in over 30 departments, centers and institutes and touches every aspect of biomedicine—from fundamental science investigating the basic building blocks of life to translational research bridging the laboratory with the hospital bed to clinical trials to test new strategies for diagnosing and treating disease.
Our research community consists of 8,500 people working everyday to improve healthcare, including:
